Bastille Day French Festival, Melbourne: The Best of La Vie A La Française

It’s that time of year for the French and Francophiles the world over to gather and celebrate la Fête Nationale, honouring the Storming of the Bastille, the overthrow of the French monarchs and the subsequent birth of the First Republic. And what better way to celebrate than with a surfeit of good food, great wine and the company of friends at Melbourne’s Bastille Day French Festival?

Taking place from Friday 12th of July (4pm-10pm) to Saturday the 13th of July (10am-10pm) at Federation Square in the heart of Melbourne CBD, there’ll be a wealth of food, wine and cultural activity to take in. Here are some of the highlights you can expect to enjoy!

FOOD AND DRINKS

Melbourne is one of the great food capitals of the world with a healthy French presence in the culinary scene. Visit the French Market, the Terrace Bistro or the café/bar at Deakin’s Edge to enjoy delicious offerings from such Melbourne institutions as Choukette, Frencheese, Gavé French Biscuit, Les Crêpes de Marion and more.

Wine Selectors will also be there, pouring wines that are genuine local expressions of the French styles, from an Alsace-like Frankland Estate Riesling 2017 to the Burgundy sensibilities of Riposte The Stiletto Pinot Gris 2018, the Bordeaux-esque Wild Cathedral Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2015 and other delicious selections. You’ll find us in The Atrium at Federation Square, located at site #21!

ENTERTAINMENT & EVENTS

It wouldn’t be a celebration of the French without music and performance to enjoy your food and wine with, and the Bastille Day French Festival Melbourne delivers. From the Jazz, Latin and Blues infusion of Vive La Différence to the golden-age jazz manouche swing of Belle Musette and the authentic rhythms and melodies of La Mauvaise Réputation’s Parisian hot jazz and classic French chanson, a host of performers will take the stage to serenade festival goers with genuine expressions of French styles.

Plus, there is a range of talks and presentations to take in, including a look at the art and life of the iconic, beloved – and deeply missed – Mirka Mora, an exploration of the Women of the French Revolution, a retrospective of the Notre Dame Cathedral, and best of all, a 2.5 hour walking tour of Melbourne’s Paris End to wrap up the festival, visiting some of the iconic French businesses that have made Melbourne home – from fashion to fragrance, food, cosmetics and more, with food and beverages included. See the full program here.

MASTERCLASSES

Want to take a deep dive in all things French? Then the Masterclass Events are for you. Foodies will love the French Wine and Cheese Pairing with Milk the Cow and M. Chapoutier Wines, hosted at Taxi. Fashion lovers meanwhile will no doubt flock to the French Couture session run by Chanel-trained French designer Delphine Genin in her Collins St Atelier. There’s also a Patisserie and Champagne masterclass and even a Fragrance masterclass to enjoy, so if you’ve always wanted to explore high culture a little more intimately, here’s your chance!

Très amazing! If you’re going, make sure to pop by the Wine Selectors stand at Site #21 to say hello and enjoy sampling some fine wines that reflect authentic Australian/French Connection. And, for our NSW Members, don’t forget that you can join in the festivities with Bastille Festival Sydney!
