Meet Graeme Shaw of Shaw Vineyard Estate

A successful family winemaking business that includes a team of over 1700 sheep? It’s time to meet Graeme Shaw, owner and winemaker of the multi-award winning winery, Shaw Vineyard Estate in Murrumbateman, NSW.

What’s it like running a family business?

Every business has its challenges and a family one is no different, yet the benefits are wide ranging. Not only do I know everyone contributing to this shared asset, but we all have a vested interest to succeed that goes deeper than normal business relationships. We are also fortunate to have a great team with shared goals working side-by-side with family members.

What are some of the highlights of your long and illustrious career?

I don’t know about the illustrious part, however the highlight has to be the completion and opening of our new cellar door, an outstanding architectural and construction achievement. This is the culmination of years of hard work by the whole team and we are proud to deliver a new range of tasting options and wine experiences for our customers.

What are your three favourite things about the Shaw Vineyard Estate?

1. Being able to develop a great family business supported by a fantastic team.

2. The vineyard site, which produces world-class fruit.

3. The outstanding new cellar door.

Shaw Vineyard Estate wines has already been recognised with trophies and a host of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals from various Australian and international wine shows. Which awards are you most proud of and why?

We have 25 trophies and around 1000 medals, but what I am most proud of is the 2015 Merriman Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine won the ‘Best Australian Cabernet Sauvignon’ at the 2018 London IWC, taking our haul to five trophies.

If you had to pick a favourite varietal, which one would you choose and why?

Riesling from the area and our vineyard is great, however I always lean towards the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Is it true that you have a workforce of over 1800?

Yes, if you include our 1790 sheep.

What advice would you give to aspiring winemakers?

Don’t own a vineyard, look around and contract with growers who are well established and instead concentrate on the winemaking and marketing. Let someone else invest in and run the vineyards.

If you had to pick a favourite wine at Shaw Vineyard Estate, which one would it be?

For me personally it would be our Estate Riesling closely followed by our Sparkling Cuvée.

The Shaw Vineyard Estate Merlot 2016 is our April wine of the month – what makes it such a standout?

The Merlot from our vineyard is always a medium to full bodied wine with a palette of rich black fruits, the 2016 is no different. Our 2013 Merlot won the trophy for the best Merlot at the Vienna wine show in 2016.

We have paired it with a delicious kangaroo fillet. What do you enjoy pairing it with?

I also love it with duck, particularly when cooked in a wood fired oven.

Your wine is part of our fantastic Chef & the Cellar Calendar Collection. Why should wine lovers buy this pack?

Apart from our Merlot, you will also receive some other great wines from NSW winemakers giving the consumer the chance to try wines chosen by some of the best wine experts around.

Other than your own wine, what wine do you like to drink at home?

I am a sucker for French Champagne.

What’s your ultimate wine and food match?

Champagne and Lobster.

What is your favourite…

NSW restaurant? OLLEYVILLE in Murrumbateman, the wood fired feast is to die for.

Food? Seafood and any Asian food.

Book? Any that gets me in within two pages, Jeffery Archer is one of those authors.

Travel destination? Noosa in Australia and Austria.
