Gamay is thought to date back as far as the 1360s in the French village of the same name. Its full name is Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc and it can be a very seductive wine. With a similar weight to Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, it thrives in sool climates only, such as Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley and Beechworth.
