The Hewitson Old Garden Vineyard Mourvèdre 2013 was crafted using fruit from the Old Garden Vineyard that was planted in 1853 and is the oldest existing Mourvèdre vineyard in the world.
In the winery: 20% whole bunch fermented and cold soaked for one week, on skins for three weeks, then 18 months in new French oak.
In the glass: Quite bright, youthful medium red.
On the nose: Black plum, chocolate and dried herb.
On the palate: An iron fist in a velvet glove with mocha-like dark fruit depth, savoury black tea, cocoa and earth complexity and masses of vanillin oak. Decadent.
