Gemtree is a family owned winery dedicated to growing better wine, naturally. Paul and Jill Buttery established the Gemtree vineyards in McLaren Vale in 1980. Now their son Andrew runs the business, their daughter Melissa Brown (nee Buttery) is the Biodynamic Viticulturist and her husband, Mike Brown is the Chief Winemaker.
Mike and Melissa’s philosophy is simple – minimal intervention in the winemaking process and a more environmentally conscious farming system to produce wines which are powerful, concentrated, and express the true characteristics of each grape variety and the region.
The vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically. The Gemtree family see themselves as custodians of the land and their approach to sustainability is simple ~ it is the right thing to do. It is not just about winemaking, it is about setting new standards for sustainable, generational farming.
Which wine is your brand hero and if that wine was a celebrity who would it be?
Our Uncut Shiraz is our founding wine and undoubtedly our brand hero, reflecting the true character of our premium Shiraz blocks. If Uncut was a celebrity he would have to be Hugh Jackman – because he has the ability to mix it with the big boys in shape and stature but can also flirt with the delicate and introverted.
Did you know...
The names of all Gemtree Wines derive from the names of Gemstones or link to our biodynamic philosophy. The reason behind this being that each wine is a gem that Chief Winemaker Mike Brown uncovers from the natural earth.
