Shaw Wines is a family owned and operated business located in Murrumbateman, NSW. The Shaw Family first moved to Murrumbateman over 30 years ago, and in 1998 purchased "Olleyville" the historic 700-acre fine wool producing property dating back to the mid-19th century. The estate is truly a family affair headed by Graeme and Ann Shaw, who oversee the operation. Their two children, Tanya and Michael are both fully employed in the family business as is Tanya's husband Mick.
Shaw Wines produces a full range of top-quality estate grown fruit which has enabled them to consistently make superb quality wines year after year. Located in a prime position within what is described as a cool climate region at an elevation of around 640 metres, the estate is quite unique in that several of the sites with appropriately sloping aspects, and superb soils, have microclimates perfectly suiting the production of outstanding Cabernet.
In fact, the property with around 70 acres under vine including Riesling, Semillon, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Malbec, provides Shaw Wines with its entire production, and can lay claim to the fact that they produce 100% estate grown wines. Shaw Wines has already been recognised with 25 Trophies and around 1000 medals. However, Graeme is most proud of the 2015 Merriman Cabernet Sauvignon with this wine winning the “Best Australian Cabernet Sauvignon” at the 2018 London IWC.
Is it true that you have a workforce of over 1800?
It certainly is – they assist us with the vineyard mowing, fertilising and vine shoot thinning. They are very punctual, have no complaints, they’re not members of any unions and have a very strong affinity with the environment. And best of all they work for nothing, except the odd meal. The only downside is they occasionally get a little bit sheepish.
