Combining Regions in a Wine at Byron and Harold
Byron and Harold is one of Western Australia’s most formidable partnerships, shining bright amongst even the most renowned Margaret River wineries with a 5-star rating from the much respected wine reviewer James Halliday. A relatively young winery founded in 2012 by Paul Byron and Harold (Ralph) Dunning, they source their grapes from the Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions with an aim to produce high quality wines, with flavour and provenance that Australian wine lovers really want to drink.

Blending Grapes
The benefits of blending grapes from two different regional locations makes for crafting truly sensational wines as winemaker Rory Parks explains, “Our Great Southern vineyards are close to Frankland River which has less maritime influence than Margaret River and is at a higher altitude. This results in warmer days, cooler nights and less rainfall. In turn creates more intense and earthy flavour profiles in the reds.
The higher rainfall and more coastal influence of Margaret River keeps the daytime temperatures cooler resulting in reds wines that are lighter, savoury, elegant and pretty. Therefore a blend of the two regions creates wines of complexity and helps us find a lovely balance in these wines, which varies season to season due to those particular vintage conditions.

The Margaret River is elegant and savoury which adds more layers of flavour to the final blend. The combined blend is more complex with excellent balance.
In their Companions Cabernet Sauvignon Great Southern & Margaret River 2019, the GS Cabernet has serious structure with lovely red fruits and hints of eucalypt. The Margaret River portion is medium bodied with refined structure showing blackberry and mint.
