Wine
Meet Steve James of Voyager Estate
Have you always want to be a winemaker?
I always wanted to be a farmer, and developed a focused interest in horticulture. The wine passion was ignited following early travels to some of the great wine regions in Europe.
What inspires you about the wine industry?
Wow! So many things really, however, I love the whole growing and making of a beautiful product that is deeply connected to the earth and nature. It’s very rewarding to see people enjoying a bottle of our wine with great food and friends.
You’ve been at Voyager Estate for almost two decades! What are your most memorable and proudest moments from this time?
So many – however, a few spring to mind! A couple of the great early wines we made such as the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, and our 2002 Chardonnay were wines which really stood out. Currently, my proudest moments are working with the amazing team of people that I get to lead, and our conversion to certified organics in the vineyard and winery.
Are you passionate about sustainability in winemaking?
Absolutely! That is one of the main reasons we’re converting to certified organic farming. Our team is committed to leaving the land in a better condition than we started for future generations.
What advice would you give to aspiring winemakers?
Spend plenty of time getting to know and understand the vineyard.
What are your goals for your future at Voyager?
Continuing to improve our vineyards and wines is an ongoing focus, along with completing the conversion to organics. Mentoring young people in wine growing is also a key focus.
If you had to pick a favourite wine at Voyager Estate, which one would it be?
Our 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a culmination of many years of hard work in the vineyard and winery, combined with an amazing vintage to produce this complex, elegant and vibrant wine.
Have you ever considered opening your own vineyard?
Yes, I have – maybe one day, but it will be very small!
The Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2014 is our wine of the month – what makes this such a standout?
From one of the greatest vintages experienced in the region, the wine displays a lovely poise and elegance. The rich smooth palate reveals complex layers of red and dark berry fruits with fine tannins, expressing the characteristics of our pristine coastal vineyard site.
We have paired it with delicious beef short ribs. What do you enjoy pairing it with?
I love to serve it with slow roasted lamb shoulder, so delicious!
Your wine is part of our fantastic Chef & the Cellar Calendar Collection. Why should wine lovers buy this pack?
The pack provides an amazing opportunity to explore the diversity of Australia’s fine wine regions with some excellent food pairings along the way.
Other than your own wine, what wine do you like to drink at home?
We drink a lot of Chardonnay – mainly from Margaret River!
What’s your ultimate wine and food match?
That would have to be crayfish sliders with a nice Margaret River Chardonnay.
