Semillon If you love Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon could be your new squeeze.“Hunter Valley Semillon is one of Australia’s great gifts to the world of wine,” Jancis Robinson, Wine Writer. Originating from France’s Bordeaux region, Semillon has the wonderful ability to reflect the climate and terroir of the vineyards in which it’s grown, with fascinating complexities and ageing characteristics. Typically, a young Semillon will be pale in the glass and feature crisp, lemon-freshness on the palate. When enjoyed young, expect a delicate, dry and characteristically savoury experience, but when bottle age occurs, these wines can be completely transformed. After five, ten or even more years, Semillon begins to exude luxurious, multi-dimensional qualities, including a depth and richness that is silky smooth and completely captivating.Marsanne Roussanne Viognier blendsYou’ll fall head over heels for these beautiful blends if you're a Chardonnay fan. Marsanne and Roussanne originated from France’s Northern Rhone region, while Viognier comes from Southern France. When the three varietals come together, the result is a sublime wine. In its youth, Marsanne is light in colour and body with a fresh acid backbone. Aromas and flavours of citrus fruits and stone fruits are common alongside the signature character of honeysuckle. Aged Marsanne will be a deeper colour with the honeysuckle and stonefruit becoming more apparent. Marsanne has a unique relationship with Roussanne – when blended Marsanne gives good weight and structure, and Roussanne adds perfume and flavour. VermentinoA turbocharged version of Pinot G for those who enjoy the versatility of food-friendly whites. Vermentino is one of Australia’s most popular alternative varieties and is quickly filling the glasses of Pinot G and Sauvignon Blanc drinkers. It hails from Italy’s Liguria region and the Mediterranean Islands of Sardinia and Corsica. With its light to medium body, Vermentino has a similar weight and profile to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling. Styles range from light and fresh to rich and textural. On the palate there are notes of lime, almond, green apple, white florals, a unique sense of sea spray, and refreshing acidity.SangioveseVersatile and food-friendly, Sangiovese offers an exciting alternative for fans of Pinot Noir.Sangiovese is appreciated for its high acidity, bright red fruit aromas, and subtle complexity. Like Pinot Noir, it reflects where it is grown exceptionally well, and it can be found in styles that range from light and crunchy to dark, bold and tannic. Italy’s most widely planted red grape variety has turned heads among Australia’s winemakers and wine lovers, and it comes into its own when matched with food, especially tomato-based dishes. A perfect match to pizza and pasta!Durif Also known as Petit Syrah, Durif is an excellent alternative for Shiraz lovers looking for more power and grunt. Durif is a big wine. It stains your glass with its deep and dark (almost black) colour. It’s full-bodied, robust, and high in tannins. It displays black fruit notes like plum, black cherry, and blackberry, and it can also feature dark chocolate and spicy characters. To match the intensity of Durif, you need richly flavoured food, so it’s ideal with red meat braises like oxtail or ribs, and works well with barbequed dishes and game. It also pairs nicely with rich comfort food like stews and any dish with black olives. A must-try if you haven’t already. MalbecMove over Cabernet Sauvignon; it’s Malbec’s moment in the spotlight. Although they have many similarities, Malbec’s flavour concentration sets it apart. Its fruit is rich and powerful. An Argentinean champion, Malbec is suited to our Australian climate and thrives in moderate Langhorne Creek, Clare Valley and Margaret River. Its high tannins, and robust structure makes it a great partner for deeply flavoured meat dishes like steak, beef-based stews or Mexican. How would you describe your go-to wine?
