Mad, bad and dangerous to know? Or simply inspired? Meet the two gentlemen bringing the passion of their convictions to the world of Australian wine.
Provenance is an integral part of any wine’s story – think of the magic locked up in the interweaving of vine, soil, sun and setting, waiting to be released by the hands of the skilled vintner. It’s this sense of origin that inspired Paul Byron and Harold (Ralph) Dunning to found Byron & Harold, one of Western Australia’s most formidable wine partnerships.
Focussing their efforts in the legendary Margaret River region and in the emerging powerhouse of Great Southern, Byron & Harold seek out the parcels of wine that they believe Australian wine lovers love best of all.
The deep, rich soils and cooling breezes of their growing regions, so similar in many ways to those present in Bordeaux, aid them in this cause, turning out sensational, high-quality fruit whose provenance is present in every drop of wine made from it.
DIVINE UNIONS
Winemaker Kate Morgan, with twenty vintages under her belt across ten wine regions in four countries, is instrumental in Byron & Harold’s mission. Elegant, distinctive wines with finesse and power emerge from her applied expertise, with the cooling Southern Ocean breezes allowing for long, even ripening in the vineyards.
Their focus is on varietals wines that their chosen regions excel in. Riesling, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet from Great Southern, and Chardonnay, and Cabernet from Margaret River. Byron & Harold honour these regions with their top two ranges, the Partners – dedicated to the best of Great Southern – and the Protocol, a tribute to Margaret River.
The Partners range encapsulates the founders’ 65 years’ combined experience in wine, bringing together the best parcels of Great Southern fruit in partnership with the region’s most dedicated growers. They speak to how soil, site and climate work together with vine, sun and rain, enabling the grower and winemaker to create a ‘true reflection of aspect, variety and place.’ The result? Great wines, that are quintessentially Great Southern.
BREAKING GROUND
Margaret River takes the focus in the Protocol range, where Byron & Harold put the assumed knowledge of 5,000 years of winemaking to the test.
Whilst acknowledging the parameters of the past, the label branches out to establish a new set of guiding principles designed to elicit the best that Margaret River is capable of. Covering every facet of grape farming, from variety to pruning style, bud counts, timing and more, the Protocol seeks to chart the world of possibilities offered by this premium region.
With such passion and aptitude at play in equal measure, it’s no wonder Byron & Harold have captured the attention of the wine loving world in such a short span of time. Two gentlemen, secretly inspired by the 19th century English poet considered in his day to be ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’, filled with the romance of the vine… it really is a match worth celebrating.
