Malbec was originally planted in Australia in the 19th century, but the clones were poor quality. Most growers replaced them in the 20th century, transforming its reputation. With a similar weight to Petit Verdot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre, it thrives in moderate climates such as Clare Valley, Langhorne Creek and Margaret River.
