BEST ROSÉ WINE IN AUSTRALIA
The popularity of Rosé has soared in Australia, with this gorgeous, blush-hued wine becoming many people's preferred drink. But before treating yourself to a delicious glass of Rosé, you might want to know what is Rosé wine? A style of wine rather than a variety, Rosé is a food-friendly and easy-to-drink wine that perfectly matches our laidback lifestyle. Neither red nor white, Rosé wine is essentially a pink wine made from red grapes, with minimal skin contact, in the style of a white wine from grapes like Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Grenache.
Australia’s ideal climatic conditions and our winemakers’ conscious shift toward Rosé have resulted in more complex and multi-layered Rosés emerging from the country. Some of the best Rosé-producing regions include:
South Australian Rosé
Since Rosé is more of a style than a varietal, it can be made in almost all wine regions. However, South Australia has a strong reputation for excellent Rosé. Many key, heat-loving grape varieties used in Rosé thrive in regions like Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, with Grenache being the predominant variety used to produce the classic regional style. The Rosé wines from these regions are pale in colour with a dry, savoury finish, whilst cool-climate styles coming from Adelaide Hills are made predominantly with Pinot Noir and are lighter-bodied, aromatic and have a silken texture.
Western Australian Rosé
Western Australia is known for crafting exceptional wines across all styles and Rosé is no exception. Reflecting the modern preference for lighter hues, these wines are dry, savoury, and beautifully balanced with refreshing acidity. While Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz remain classic choices, you'll also discover outstanding Rosés made from an array of single varieties and blends.
Yarra Valley Rosé, Victoria
Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are two of the Yarra Valley’s hallmark red varieties, and they are used for Rosé production along with a suite of other varieties, including Pinot Meunier, and Nebbiolo. The wines are light-bodied but have acidity and tannin, which play a pivotal role in their flavour and structure.
Mudgee Rosé, NSW
Mudgee’s growing conditions are perfect for traditional Rosé. They are pale in colour, dry, and savoury, showing varietal flavours and characters.
HOW IS ROSÉ WINE MADE?
How does Rosé get its pink colour, and how is Rosé made? Though Aussie winemakers started focusing on Rosé only recently, today, it is far more nuanced, with designated parcels of fruits specially picked for making Rosé wine. Like red wine, Rosés pick up their colour from the skin of red wine grapes. The winemaker can determine the depth of colour in the wine by deciding how long to leave the juice in contact with the skins, typically anywhere from 2 to 24 hours – the shorter the time, the lighter the colour. Different techniques are used for this process, including the maceration method, which allows the crushed skins of the red wine grapes to ‘steep’, or macerate, in the juice for a short time before the skins are removed.

IS ROSÉ WINE SWEET OR DRY?
Given how many different varietals can be used to make Rosé, it can taste from dry to sweet and everything in between. This means you can always find a Rosé that suits your tastes. However, most Australian Rosé are made in a dry style.
IS ROSÉ A WINE OR CHAMPAGNE?
Rosé is a delicious pink wine. The term ‘Champagne’ refers to sparkling wines produced exclusively within the Champagne region in France. Shop Sparkling Rosé, and discover a new favourite!
HOW LONG DOES ROSÉ WINE LAST UNOPENED?
Rosé is a ‘drink now’ style of wine that doesn’t need to be cellared, but if you are wondering how long Rosé lasts unopened, it depends mainly on the recommended drinking window. Most unopened Rosé will last 2-3 years, and if you have an opened bottle, it is best to refrigerate and use it within three days.
