Luigi Bormioli

In 1946, a young Italian engineer by the name of Luigi Bormioli changed the way we enjoy wine. Born into a family of artistic glass makers, Luigi combined generational knowledge with brilliant engineering skills and state-of-the-art machinery to automatically manufacture the world’s first drop stem wine glass – the stem and bowl joined in one seamless piece. Artistic stemware that was only possible through the mouth blown technique became affordable to Europe’s growing middle class. It helped to establish Luigi Bormioli as one of the world’s leading glassware manufacturers.

Over 70 years later, the combination of beauty, quality and durability is still at the heart of the Luigi Bormioli brand. One of their most significant innovations is SON.hyx®, a high-tech blown lead-free crystal glass that does not contain heavy metals.

This means each glass is not only elegantly designed with ultra clear glass to allow the ultimate visual evaluation of the brightness and hues of wine, but is break resistant to chipped rims, to impact blows on the bowl, and to the twisting of stems (which happens often when drying by hand). It is also dishwasher safe for at least 4,000 cycles (which equates to three washes a week for 25 years).
