Taste Play Stay Beechworth
Just five minutes is all it takes to become utterly beholden to the old world charms of Beechworth and surrounds.
Snuggled in at the southernmost end of the South West Slopes in Victoria’s northeastern reaches, just shy of the NSW border, Beechworth is positively alive with history, with ties to our first Australian-born Governer General, Sir Isaac Isaacs, as well as the celebrated outlaw Ned Kelly, sometime tenant at HM Prison Beechworth.
Now home to around 3,500 people, at its Gold Rush-era peak Beechworth boasted a host of industries, from tanneries to jewellers, blacksmiths and bootmakers. Today it has successfully made the transition to a popular tourist centre, rightfully celebrated not only for its picturesque streets, but for its fantastic food and wine scene as well.
Highly explorable by foot and exceedingly well-preserved by any historical standard, it offers visitors a rare opportunity to step back into an earlier time, while allowing all the pleasures that contemporary tastes and creature comforts can afford.
But don’t limit yourself to the township itself – make sure to get out and discover its surrounds, either on foot or by bike, where waterfalls and gorges await the adventurous.
Art, history, nature, and endless delights for the palate – that’s Beechworth.
