WHERE IS THE RIVERINA?
The Riverina wine region is located on the south-west plains of New South Wales. Its flat plains, bordered by the Cocoparra ranges, rich soil, irrigation scheme and a warm Mediterranean climate, were the key factors in developing the wine region back in 1913. Over a hundred years later, many of Australia's well-known family wineries still have their headquarters in the Riverina wine region, making award-winning wines and in more recent years championing alternative varietals.
WHAT TOWNS ARE IN THE NSW RIVERINA?
With Griffith as its major regional city, the Riverina also takes in many surrounding villages including Yenda, Hanwood, Bilbul, and Tharbogang, plus larger towns like Leeton, Wagga Wagga and Albury. We suggest a private car or hire car is the best way to get around the region. When you’re planning to do some wine tastings always ensure you have a designated driver, or book with one of excellent local winery tour operators.
WHY IS THE RIVERINA CALLED THE ‘FOOD BOWL’?
With incredibly fertile soils and an almost constant supply of water, the Riverina region offers perfect conditions for many agricultural pursuits producing around 90% of New South Wales’ citrus crops, and a whopping 80% of the state’s wine grapes are grown there. It also produces most of Australia’s rice and is home to an amazing number of canola, maize, almond, vegetable, and fruit farms, plus sheep and cattle stations and feedlots.
WHAT WINE iS RIVERINA KNOWN FOR?
The Riverina wine region is the largest wine producing region in New South Wales and is responsible for over 15% of Australia’s total grape production, making it the second largest in the country. There are over 60 grape varieties grown in the Riverina wine region including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot, Durif, Botrytis Semillon, Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Vermentino and Fiano.
