Wines of the Season: IronCloud Wines
Founded by friends
IronCloud Estate calls WA’s Ferguson Valley in the Geographe wine region home. Their single vineyard estate (originally called Pepperilly) was planted in 1999 on highly prized red gravelly loam soils. The joint effort of three friends, Geoff, Karyn and Warwick, IronCloud Estate aims to produce wines with a unique sense of terroir, drawing inspiration from the great wines of the world.
Ironcloud rock of solitude purple patch GSM 2017
The 2017 Purple Patch is a traditional Rhône-style blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. Dark red with a purple hue, it allures with vibrant aromas of cherry and sweet spice. On the palate, it's medium bodied and elegant with flavours of strawberry and dark cherry supported by sweet spice and silky tannins with a lingering finish. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for 3–5 years.
The 2017 Vintage
The 2017 growing season had higher than average rain events late in the winter, followed by another one in early spring that increased soil moisture. October conditions were unseasonably warm and combined with the increased soil moisture caused slightly higher than normal vine growth. The growing period was longer and milder, which favoured the earlier ripening varieties – overall, a challenging, cooler vintage resulting in leaner, elegant more complex, austere styles.
